The Pain of Being Misunderstood

Friday, June 06, 2025 | By: Ellen Radcliff LMFT, Jacksonville, NC, USA

In this episode of Heart Set Above, Host, Ellen Radcliff, LMFT, explores the profound pain of being misunderstood—something we all experience, yet rarely pause to examine. Drawing from her own life as an introvert, therapist, and mother of an autistic child, Ellen unpacks how misunderstanding shapes relationships, fuels conflict, and exposes our deep longing to be known.

She also reflects on God's own experience of being misjudged and rejected throughout history, offering a new perspective on how our struggles can draw us closer to Him.

If you've ever felt unseen, unheard, or misrepresented, this episode is for you.

Ellen Radcliff is a devoted Christian, wife, mother, and licensed therapist passionate about helping believers navigate life’s complexities with both truth and grace.

For over 15 years, Ellen has walked alongside individuals, couples, and families seeking to integrate their faith into the realities of everyday life. She specializes in guiding Christians through some of life’s most tender and challenging topics—identity, intimacy, grief, sexuality, conflict, and discipleship—always with the goal of strengthening their relationships with God, self, and others.

She is particularly known for helping people embrace the ‘messy middle’—the space where biblical truth and radical love intersect.

Ellen has a gift for communication and an ability to truly see people—helping them feel understood, valued, and known. She strives to see others through God’s lens and encourages them to do the same, shifting their perspective from earthly limitations to a heart set above.

She is the founder and President of Heart Set Above, a nonprofit dedicated to equipping Christians with biblically sound and psychologically informed tools for deepening faith and fostering meaningful connections.

She is also the author of Love Covers Over: A Guide for Christian Parents Raising Kids in an LGBTQ+ World and serves as the Chief Operating Officer of Strength in Weakness Ministries, where she has spent over a decade helping Christians navigate faith, sexuality, and gender with clarity and conviction.

As a same-sex attracted woman who has navigated her own journey of faith, sexuality, and identity, Ellen offers a unique perspective that resonates with Christians from all walks of life. Whether through counseling, teaching, speaking, writing, or podcasting, her heart remains the same—to help people fall more deeply in love with God and live out their faith with both conviction and compassion.

Ellen is a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist (LMFT) and a Licensed Clinical Mental Health Counselor (LCMHC). She holds a BA in Interpersonal Communication from East Carolina University and an MA in Counseling from Harding School of Theology. She lives in North Carolina with her husband and children, where she continues to explore new ways to help others grow in faith, connection, and intention.
