We are the light of the world (Matthew 5:14)

From darkness God has called us to His wonderful light. We are a chosen people, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, an acquired people, so that we may proclaim the virtues of God (1 Peter 2: 9-10). Therefore, we made the choice to leave the world in order to be known as children of God. Our life is now characterized by a walk in the light just as our Savior and Teacher Jesus Christ did (1 John 1: 6-9). Meaning, walking in the light is not an option, it requires real commitment. Are we currently engaged in the light? Why is it important for a Christian to walk in the light?

1) We Are Saints

Ephesians 1:4-5

For he chose us in him before the creation of the world to be holy and blameless in his sight. In love he predestined us for adoption to sonship through Jesus Christ, in accordance with his pleasure and will

God has chosen us from a fallen world. He chose us, not because we were saints but so that we could become them. And holy is what we have become, through Jesus. Isn’t that wonderful! As a matter of fact, “holy” is the one who has been set aside for God Himself. Under Moses’s law, something that was sanctified could not be used for common use. Neglecting this law could lead to death! Like for the sons of Aaron (Leviticus 10:1-3). Therefore, since our baptism, we belong to God. He washed us from sin, He chose us for Him personally, He justified us in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ and through the Holy Spirit (1 Corinthians 6:11). Are we aware of this reality?

The quality of our relationship with God depends on the knowledge that we have about this reality. Unfortunately, we don’t always understand the depth of it. And often it is displayed in the way we can conduct/comport ourselves in the assembly of the saints or outside of it. It can also be seen in how we react to certain events that we face in life. The Bible declares that we are holy and that we should live like it. So the practice of holiness is mandatory for a Christian, because she doesn’t live for herself anymore, but for the One who called her from the darkness to His delightful light. Therefore, she lives according to the desires of God, so that she can glorify Him in all aspects of her life. Living in holiness can seem difficult. However, it is only possible through our relationship with God. Furthermore, when we sin, we can be forgiven, be it that we confess our sin. Contrary to the people of the world who give in to sin & temptation, our life is dedicated to purity. Are we dedicated to purity today? Are our hearts pure? Have we regressed in our walk with God? Are we hypocrites? Are we sincerely seeking to glorify God’s name? We are saints! Meaning, our life should reflect Jesus’s character traits through the conduct of the Holy Spirit (Galatians 5:22-25/ Ephesians 5:8-11). And we should do so because of our love for God.

2) We Are the Light of the World

Matthew 5:14-15

“You are the light of the world. A town built on a hill cannot be hidden. Neither do people light a lamp and put it under a bowl. Instead they put it on its stand, and it gives light to everyone in the house. In the same way, let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven.

We live in a world where man lives in ignorance when it comes to sin. Therefore, it is our duty to shine before them, so that they may see our good deeds and praise God. Having understood this, the life of a Christian should be a life with impact. If we were to be evaluated by our families, our colleagues, our neighbors, or even just the people around us in general, what would they say about us?

We are, undeniably, the living word, that God sends to be read and known to all men. God’s will is that all men be saved and that they all come to know the truth (1 Timothy 2:3-4). So, is the salvation of lost souls something that preoccupies our thoughts?

To sum it up: we shouldn’t be involved with the habits of this world. God put us aside for Him. Also, we’ve been called by Him to shine in a fallen world so that His glory may be revealed!

Nous sommes la lumière du monde (Matthieu 5 : 14)
