Wellness Wednesdays

Lois Kirkpatrick is an internationally certified fitness professional. She has been teaching a type of yoga called Body Flow in Gold's Gyms near Washington, D.C. since 2014.

Lois was baptized into Christ as part of the campus ministry in Columbia, Missouri, and she and her husband have been members of the Northern Virginia Church of Christ for about 15 years. Lois has led a number of mind-body activities for sisters in that congregation.

Currently, Lois is part of a series entitled "Wellness Wednesdays" on the Northern Virginia church's YouTube channel. Enjoy her 13-minute video on the Power of Your Breath, an excellent practical and effective tool!  As we master her four-count "combat breathing" pattern, we can even use it to help us as we pray, meditating on God's word, and even as an aid in memorizing Scripture.

Here's how:  find a verse or a passage that resonates with you, which takes about four seconds for you to recite to yourself in your head. Then just use those words in place of counting to four as you run through the breathing pattern of inhale - hold - exhale - and hold.

For example, the beginning of Psalm 41 in the NIV seems to fit well: "Blessed is he who has regard for the weak," is a phrase that could take about four seconds to recite, slowly and silently, while inhaling. Then hold your breath and repeat that same phrase silently.  On the exhale, recite the next phrase from Psalm 41:1 -- "the Lord delivers him in times of trouble," and repeat that phrase while holding your breath for a final four seconds.

Thanks so much, Lois, for using your gifts and sharing your expertise with us, both spiritually and effectively!

Lois Kirkpatrick instructs us how to use combat breathing to relax and clarify our minds as soldiers of Christ in a crazy world.
