"I am thirsty."
John 19:28
This is the shortest and most human of Jesus’ statements on the cross. It is a physical complaint, a simple expression of His agonizing dehydration. It reminds us that He was fully human, subject to all the physical limitations and suffering we experience. He wasn't a robot on the cross; He was a man dying a brutal death.
This utterance speaks to the universal reality of suffering and our need for relief. As women, we often deny our own physical or emotional needs, pushing through exhaustion, stress, or pain for the sake of others. Jesus’ simple statement gives us permission to acknowledge our frailty. Perhaps more importantly, it points to the deeper, spiritual thirst we all have—a thirst for God’s presence, peace, and purpose.
When was the last time you admitted thirst? Weakness? Fear? Pain? Even during the agonizing scene of the cross, God provided someone to meet this simple physical need expressed by Jesus’ words.
“A jar of wine vinegar was there, so they soaked a sponge in it,
put the sponge on a stalk of the hyssop plant, and lifted it to Jesus’ lips.”
John 19:29
As we share our needs with those around us, our Lord stands ready to send brothers, sisters, and even nameless bystanders (as in John 19:29) our way to help provide relief. We need simply to open our mouths and acknowledge: “I thirst.”
Are you feeling depleted today? Take note of Jesus’ humanity and know that He understands your thirst. Turn to Him, the living water, who promises that those who drink of Him will never thirst again (John 4:14). Consider sharing your heart also with a trusted Christian friend or mentor. Note how God provides.

Stephanie - These quiet times have been a great reminder that Jesus suffered but he did go it alone. He relied first on God and then took others with him. I feel like as people we so often try to live our lives separately from each other instead of together. I pray we can share the good and the bad with each other as we first rely on God.
