This event idea comes to us from Surabaya, a port city on the Indonesian Island of Java. For most of our readers, Indonesia is an exotic place, far away from most anywhere we’ve ever been. Of course there are the lucky few who have had the chance to visit that region of the world and experience its unparalleled beauty and history. And some of you live there!
Our ICOC churches in the SEA Region (SouthEastAsia) have some unique strengths among our family of churches. One example of several we could cite is the way they have reached out across international, cultural, and language boundaries to collaborate and create edifying online events. Following is a recent example of an in-person event in the Tangerang church, a “sister class” which they do on a regular basis.
On the program was a guest speaker (Aurelia Mei), followed by small group discussions with 5 or 6 women in each group, where church members and visitors could process and share takeaways from the talk. The speaker “preached the Word, powerful and convicting,” according to Joyce Pangau, women’s ministry leader in Tangerang (https://www.gkdi.org/gereja/surabaya/). After that there were fun, competitive games to get everyone involved; and to top it all off -- a fashion show.
The audience was made up of over 250 attendees, of which 60 were women who are not yet members of the Tangerang church, some of whom are already involved in the church’s Bible study series for newcomers.
We’re taking notes!
